Learning Community: The Gospel of Mark as a Single Story Sunday Mornings at 9:15am January 8 to February 19
Most of the time we read the gospels in bits and pieces, but what if we read and hear a gospel as a coherent story, as if we've never heard it before.
What is the setting? Who is the narrator? What is the plot? Who are the characters? Who is the audience?
In this seven-week class we will try to see Mark's story of Jesus whole, maybe like it was heard in the first century.
The version we are reading together can be downloaded or read online by clicking here. If you would like a printed copy (57 pages) but are unable to print at home, reach out to the church office!
Besides, or in addition to, reading the story. You could also listen to someone recite it. Here are some options.
~The actor Alec McCowan did a very famous and award-winning performance of the gospel some years ago in London and on Broadway. It runs 1 hour and 45 minutes. You can purchase a DVD of that performance for $19.95 from Amazon.
Book Group: A Psalm for the Wild-Built Next meeting on February 6 at 7pm
Our book group will be starting up again on Zoom! We will start the year reading the book A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers beginning January 16 at 7pm. We will be meeting the first and third Mondays of the month.
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.
One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered.
But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.
They're going to need to ask it a lot.
Upcoming Meetings February 6th at 7pm February 20th at 7pm
Becky Chambers was raised in California as the progeny of an astrobiology educator, an aerospace engineer, and an Apollo-era rocket scientist. Her first novel, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, was originally funded via Kickstarter in 2012. Her books have been nominated for the Kitschies Award, the Hugo Award, the Locus Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the Women's Prize for Fiction, among others, and won the Prix Julia Verlanger. After living in Scotland and Iceland, Becky is now back in her home state, where she lives with her spouse. She is a devotee of video and tabletop games, and enjoys spending time in nature. She hopes to see Earth from orbit one day.
Join us on the second Monday of the month for the next Pottstown Poetry Group Open-Mic.
“What happens at an open-mic poetry reading?” you ask. Great question! You can… • Read a favorite poem (or more than one if we have time) • Read a poem you wrote • Just sit back and listen to others reading poetry!
Bring a poem to read or come to just listen and the beauty of words with us.
